KULAI: A property agent loses over RM118,000 after falling for a job scam where she thought she was becoming an affiliate seller.
Kulai OCPD Asst Comm Tan Seng Lee said the 47-year-old woman was offered a fake part-time job as an affiliate seller on a website.
“She agreed to it as she was attracted by the prospect of earning a 20% profit of up to RM1,000 daily.
“She was told that the profits will be credited to her account on the website,” he said in a statement on Saturday (Jan 25).
ACP Tan said the victim followed the instructions and deposited a total of RM118,150 into two bank accounts from Jan 11 to 17.
“She paid the amount in five transactions, thinking she would earn a handsome profit from the venture.
“Although her account on the website showed that she had made RM34,809, she was locked out of the account when she tried to cash out her earnings,” he added.
The victim suspected she had been duped and decided to lodge a police report on Friday (Jan 24).
ACP Tan said the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for offering a fake investment scheme, which is punishable with imprisonment for up to 10 years, caning and a fine upon conviction.
He advised the public not to fall for job or investment schemes that promise high returns in a short period of time.
“The public should also be careful when transferring money to strangers and check the bank account numbers using the police’s Semak Mule portal,” he said.
