A FIREFIGHTER in China, who suffered brain damage almost two years ago after giving his gas mask to a little girl trapped in a fire, is now able to walk without assistance.
Ku Xuehui, 32, has made considerable progress since the fire in Hebei province in March 2023, Sin Chew Daily reported.
His memory is gradually returning while his mental capacity has improved to the level of a secondary school student.
Previously, his mental faculties were reduced to that of a three-year-old due to brain damage.
Ku had entered a burning building to save a girl trapped on the third floor. To ensure the girl’s safety, he gave her his own gas mask, leaving himself exposed to toxic fumes.
After over 600 days of treatment, his wife Sun Lei has begun to see hope.
Ku’s condition has steadily improved, going from being almost in a vegetative state to now being able to care for himself. He can now prepare a meal – he can chop onions, arrange the ingredients and seasoning.
On Jan 21, Sun posted a video of her holding a box of milk, toasting with Ku and their son.
In one video, she was seen patiently guiding Ku to relearn to speak one word at a time.
