BANGI: Malaysia is targeting to reclaim its position as the world’s leading rubber producer within the next decade, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said the goal is achievable, provided that replanting efforts and innovation within the rubber industry are carried out comprehensively and systematically.

“I have discussed this with the chairman and directors of the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda) and I believe we can achieve this within 10 years,” he said after opening the Risda Field Officers Convention yesterday.

The Deputy Prime Minister said Malaysia has 800,000ha of rubber plantations, with 400,000ha in need of replanting.

Malaysia is now ranked 10th rubber producing nation and its share of world rubber supply currently stands at 50%.

Ahmad Zahid pointed to the critical role of innovation, technology and sustainable practices in ensuring the continued competitiveness and productivity of Malaysia’s rubber sector.

“We must be bold enough to move away from outdated practices. The rubber sector needs to become more appealing to the younger generation through the integration of modern technologies such as AI, automation and agricultural innovation.

“Imagine rubber plantations utilising Internet of Things, drones to boost productivity, and e-commerce platforms linking smallholders directly to global markets.

“This isn’t just a transformation, it is a revolution in the rubber industry that we all look forward to witnessing,” he added, Bernama reported.

For over a century, Malaysia’s rubber industry has been a cornerstone of the country’s economic growth.

In 2023, the export value of Malaysia’s rubber industry, including rubberwood, was projected to reach RM37.2bil, highlighting its significant role in the national economy.

Ahmad Zahid also said that a proposal will be presented to the Cabinet to seek approval for an initiative to designate Risda as the sole buyer of rubber from smallholders.

He said this new measure was to safeguard the welfare and well-being of smallholders who rely on floor prices set annually by the Prime Minister during the Budget speech.

“This is a game-changer and a fresh proposal. I have instructed the director-general and secretary-general of the Rural and Regional Development Ministry to prepare a working paper to be presented to the Cabinet within the next two months,” he said.

Earlier in his speech, Ahmad Zahid spoke on the need to raise rubber prices and boost latex production, noting that Malaysia currently imports latex worth RM6bil annually, despite being a major producer.

“Collaboration could be key to enhancing rubber prices and latex production. We aim to identify markets and develop products based on natural rubber by working together with industry players to reduce reliance on artificial rubber,” he said.
