UM lodges police report over paint-splashing incident at KK Mart outlet on campus

PETALING JAYA: Universiti Malaya (UM) has filed a report with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) after red paint was splashed on the doors of a KK Mart outlet on UM's grounds on Tuesday (Jan 21).

"UM takes the paint-splashing incident that occurred yesterday at the KK Mart premises on campus very seriously," said the university in a statement issued on Wednesday (Jan 22).

"UM is committed to providing full cooperation with the authorities in conducting the investigation," it added.

The varsity also urged strict action against those responsible to ensure such incidents do not recur.

"UM also calls on anyone with relevant information about this incident to step forward and assist with the investigation," the statement read.

Last week, a sandwich pack labelled "ham & cheese" sold at a KK Concept Store in UM sparked controversy due to the Malaysian halal logo.

On Jan 10, two KK Super Mart outlets in UM were closed following inspections by the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry.

Jakim said the sandwich does not have an official halal certificate and that the company that produced it is not a Malaysia halal certificate (SPHM) holder.

In its statement, KK Super Mart said Shake And Bake Cafe had provided a halal certificate for the chicken ham and cheese layers for reference.

Shake And Bake Cafe was also not authorised to use the KK Super Mart logo on the sandwich packaging, KK Super Mart said.
