Teen among seven charged over bogus investment scheme


JOHOR BARU: Seven people, including an underaged boy, have been charged at the Magistrate’s Court here for carrying out a bogus online investment scheme.

Six of the accused, namely Choo Weng Seng, 39; Tan Chun Leong, 41; Sky Chang Ji Shiang, 20; Yap Wai Xien, 20; Ryan Wong Wor Yew, 24; and Wess Lee Von Kim, 19, pleaded guilty in front of magistrate Hidayatul Syuhada Shamsudin yesterday.

However, a 17-year-old youth claimed trial for the offence against him.

All of them are accused of committing a non-existent online investment fraud along Jalan Ekoflora 5/21 in Taman Ekoflora here at around 3pm on Jan 13 this year.

Hidayatul Syuhada then set March 6 for sentencing and the pending handover of documents and reports from the Welfare Department.

Deputy public prosecutor Nik Noratini Nik Azman prosecuted while lawyer Dahlia Tan represented all of the accused.

Meanwhile, another group of nine people, including a woman, have been charged at the Kota Tinggi Magistrate’s Court for offering non-existing employment.

Lee Kok Hong, 28; Alvin Loh Kar Xuan, 20; Tristan Wong Yong Jing, 22; Liow Jia Wei, 21; Teng Kai Wen, 20; Ernest Koh Boyuen, 23; Chin Jun Soon, 20; Koh Zhi Yu, 24; and Stella Teo Kai Ting, 20, pleaded guilty in front of magistrate Nurkhalida Farhana Abu Bakar.

All of the accused worked as customer service operators offering non-existing jobs online, and they were charged under Section 120B(2) of the Penal Code.

They admitted committing the offence at Taman Desaru Utama in Bandar Penawar at around 5pm on Jan 16 this year.

Nurkhalida Farhana then set a RM7,000 fine against each of the accused in default of four months’ imprisonment.

Deputy public prosecutor Foo Fong Leong prosecuted while lawyers Tan Hik Tao and G. Neshalie represented all the accused.
