KUCHING: The Sarawak government will host a Chinese New Year open house at the Borneo Convention Centre here on Tuesday (Jan 29), the first day of the celebrations.

Deputy Premier Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said all are welcome to attend the open house from 8.45am to 2pm.

He said this was in line with Sarawak's policy of inclusivity, with the state government hosting open houses for major festivals including Hari Raya and Gawai.

"As we usher in the Year of the Snake, we wish the people of Sarawak peace and prosperity in our diverse communities.

"We may face challenges in 2025, but if we remain united there will be opportunities for us to learn and grow," he told a press conference here on Wednesday (Jan 22).

Dr Sim said Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi would be the guests of honour at the open house.

Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg and his wife Puan Sri Juma'ani Tuanku Bujang will also be present.

"Last year we had about 5,000 people attending the open house and we expect a similar number this year," Dr Sim said.

Visitors will be entertained by cultural performances, including an opening lion dance and music by the Oriental Chinese Orchestra.

Local singers Valerie Thiam, Ng Chien Chien, Ivando, Roxy Izy and Hafizah will also take to the stage.

The celebration will be streamed live by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) on Facebook and YouTube.
