Former government dept director arrested for RM110,000 bribery in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: A former government department director has been arrested for allegedly accepting bribes totaling around RM110,000 from companies awarded supply projects by his department.

The suspect, in his 50s, was detained at approximately 2.30pm while providing a statement at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office in Kota Kinabalu on Wednesday (Jan 22).

Initial investigations revealed that the suspect committed the offence in early 2024 and is alleged to have solicited bribes for officials under his jurisdiction as well.

According to MACC sources, the suspect is believed to have received bribes in the form of various items, including a washing machine, laptops, tablets, smartphones, an electric guitar, gym equipment, car accessories, and payments for a motorcycle purchase.

Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrest and stated they are investigating the matter under the MACC Act 2009.

He noted that graftbusters have seized the items allegedly received as bribes.

"The suspect will be released on MACC bail once his statements have been recorded," he said.
