SEREMBAN: Two suspects, including a deputy director of a government agency, have been detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly soliciting and accepting bribes totalling some RM600,000.
The two, in their 40s, were detained at the Negri Sembilan MACC office on Monday (Jan 20) after they were called in for questioning.
It is learnt that the two allegedly solicited bribes from companies planning to invest in the state.
A source said the bribes were to obtain certain necessary approvals for the companies' applications.
"A preliminary probe indicated that they had asked for and received bribes between 2019 and 2024.
"The bribes were allegedly banked into the account of a consulting company that acted as the middleman," he said.
Earlier on Tuesday (Jan 21), the MACC obtained a remand order to hold the suspects until Monday (Jan 27).
The application was made by MACC prosecuting officer Mohamad Nazif Haikal Jalaludin before Magistrate Syed Farid Syed Ali.
When contacted, state MACC director Awgkok Ahmad Taufik Putra Awg Ismail confirmed the case, adding that it was being probed under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
