Penang cops suspect illegal racing led to teen's death in expressway crash

GEORGE TOWN: A 17-year-old boy was killed on the spot in an accident early Tuesday (Jan 21) morning that police believe is linked to illegal racing.

Balik Pulau OCPD Asst Comm Sazalee Adam said the accident occurred around 4.30am on Monday (Jan 21) along the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway.

"We received a phone call from the public to report a fatal accident involving a male victim on the expressway near the Keysight Factory from George Town heading towards Batu Maung.

"Preliminary investigation at the scene found that the accident happened while the victim, a student of SMK Sungai Nibong, was riding a motorcycle when the crash occurred in front of the factory.

"He was pronounced dead at the scene," he said in a statement.

ACP Sazalee said the number of vehicles involved and the cause of the accident is still being investigated.

"No witnesses have come forward to help with the investigation yet.

"We believe the victim's friend, a suspect in the incident, was also racing at the time.

"The victim has been sent to Hospital Balik Pulau's forensics department," he added.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
