Man and woman nabbed for fake firearms sale in Sarawak

SIBU: A man and a woman have been held in custody for selling fake firearms in a shop in Wisma Sanyan, on Monday.

The suspects, 29 and 45 comprise an employee and the owner of the shop.

Sibu OCPD, Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili, said that the arrests were made at around 2.30pm as part of a special operation called Ops Laras.

"This raid is part of a statewide operation in Sarawak following complaints and reports regarding the sale of fake firearms to the public," he said at a press conference on Tuesday (January 21).

During the raid, the police seized 25 fake pistol barrels and 35 fake rifle barrels, with an estimated total value of RM35,000.

The case is being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960, which carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison, a fine of up to RM5,000, or both, upon conviction.

ACP Zulkipli further emphasised that the possession, purchase, or sale of fake firearms is a criminal offence, regardless of the intent.

"The police urge the public to come forward and report any information regarding such activities at the nearest police station to assist in the investigation," he added.

It is hoped that this seizure will help prevent the misuse of imitation firearms and ensure public safety from potential threats, he stressed.
