JOHOR BARU: A scandalous video implicating a local councillor in obscene activities has seen the police stepping in to probe.
Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm M. Kumarasan confirmed that a police report about the video was lodged yesterday, but remained tight-lipped about the details, stating only that investigations were underway.
The 43-second video allegedly contains a photograph of a councillor alongside indecent images and was anonymously sent to a Chinese daily on Saturday.
Johor MCA deputy chairman Ling Tian Soon said the news report on the clip suggested that the councillor in question is a Malaysian Chinese man.
Ling had earlier slammed the video, saying that it was created with malicious intent.
“It is known that all Chinese local councillors in Johor are MCA representatives, so we need to address this matter,” Ling said in an online press conference yesterday.
He said the language in the clip appeared to be Vietnamese, and the only similarity between the councillor and the individual shown was their height.
“Nevertheless, I have advised the councillor in question to lodge a police report as this has tarnished his name, the party’s image and the image of local councillors as a whole,” said Ling, who is also state health and environment committee chairman.
He added that the inclusion of the councillor’s photos in the video could mislead the public into believing that he was the person in the clip.
When asked whether the video could be part of a coordinated smear campaign, Ling said they would leave it to the police to investigate.
The councillor, believed to be from a local council in southern Johor, has staunchly denied the allegations in the Chinese daily’s report.
The councillor described himself as a devout Buddhist and insisted he would never engage in such activities.
Johor currently has a total of 126 local councillors representing MCA.
