Cigarette smuggling couple held

TUMPAT: A husband-and-wife pair, both aged 34, were arrested in Kampung Belimbing, Tanah Merah, on suspicion of smuggling cigarettes worth RM648,738.

Kelantan Customs Department director Wan Jamal Abdul Salam Wan Long said the contraband was seized last week after his team intercepted a lorry carrying 539,400 cigarettes, believed to have been smuggled from a neighbouring country.

The cigarettes are believed to be sold to foreign workers from China in the Klang Valley.

“The cigarettes are worth RM102,486, with duties amounting to RM366,252.60. The lorry worth RM180,000 was also seized,” he said, Bernama reported.
