Keep your eyes on the food, not the phone: Sabah Bomba director's CNY cooking safety tip

KOTA KINABALU: Put your phone down while cooking – a simple but stern reminder from Sabah Fire and Rescue Department director Jainal @ Zainal Madasin, who warns that negligence in the kitchen can lead to fire hazards.

As families prepare meals for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations, Jainal urged the public to stay alert and avoid distractions that could result in accidents.

“Carelessness while cooking can be dangerous. I urge everyone to supervise kitchen activities and avoid the three hazards—forgetfulness, negligence, and distraction,” he said during the launch of the department’s Chinese New Year Safety Campaign on Thursday (Jan 16).

Last year, the department recorded 773 fire-related emergency calls during the festive season, including structural fires, along with 781 incidents involving vehicle accidents.

Two fatalities and five injuries were reported due to fires.

Jainal also reminded the public to switch off electrical appliances before leaving the house and ensure cooking flames are completely extinguished.

“Do not allow children to play with fire. And when cooking, avoid distractions such as smartphones, we do not want your cooking to go unattended,” he stressed.

He further advised homeowners to check their electrical appliances, avoid overloading sockets, and keep fire safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers, readily available.

“Safety is a shared responsibility. Let us all protect our lives and property. May this new year bring happiness, prosperity, and safety to all,” Jainal said.
