No effort to cover up criminal intimidation case involving minister's son, says Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA: There is no effort to cover up the criminal intimidation case involving the son of a minister, says Fahmi Fadzil.

"There is none," the Communications Minister, who is also the government spokesman, said briefly during his weekly post-cabinet meeting press briefing on Wednesday (Jan 15).

He was asked to address concerns of a cover up of the case by certain quarters.

On Tuesday (Jan 14), police confirmed the authenticity of a marriage certificate which showed that the son of a Cabinet minister had married the woman linked to him in a criminal intimidation case.

The marriage certificate showed that he was married in southern Thailand in September last year, according to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.

He said the document was legitimate based on checks conducted by investigators.

“The minister’s son and woman were in love but they faced obstacles in getting married.

"They had concealed their marriage so much so that even their friends did not know about it.

“They did not want the issue to be blown out of proportion to avoid hurting the feelings of their family members,” said Razarudin.

The case made headlines after social media posts emerged, claiming that a Cabinet minister’s son had threatened a woman who accused him of being responsible for her pregnancy.

Their exchange is said to have happened during a discussion with the woman and several others at a house in Butterworth, Penang, on Dec 24 last year.

A police report was lodged on Jan 1 and authorities are said to be seeking a pregnancy report from the complainant.

It was later revealed that the minister’s son is married to the woman.

On Jan 11, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that no one, including his son, is above the law.

Meanwhile, Fahmi also dismissed Muafakat Nasional president Tan Sri Annuar Musa's recent Facebook post, that speculated about a new prime minister.

"It is not the election yet. Let him dream," he said.
