Gotong-royong turns into animal cruelty storm

KAJANG: In what was supposed to be a gotong-royong to clean up the surroundings of an apartment block in Cheras, even cats were rounded up into gunny sacks and disposed of.

A viral video of the incident caught the eye of veterinary officers, who went over and seized several cages and sacks from a unit in the block at Batu 9 on Sunday.

A vehicle parked below was also seized.

The Selangor Veterinary Department said a team was dispatched to the scene on Sunday based on the clip showing a group of men rounding up cats and disposing of them.

It said checks revealed that the incident occurred between 9am and 3pm on Saturday during a gotong-royong organised by the apartment’s joint management body.

It said statements were also recorded from several persons believed to have been involved in the incident.

An investigation is being conducted under Subsection 29(1) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015.

“The investigation paper will be referred to the Selangor Prosecution Unit once the probe is completed,” it said.

A representative of the group caught on camera denied allegations of animal abuse.

The group has also lodged a police report.
