60 motorcycles seized at Penang Second Bridge in police op

GEORGE TOWN: Performing the "superman" stunt and illegally racing on the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge led to 60 motorcycles being seized and 170 summonses issued.

Balik Pulau OCPD Asst Comm Sazalee Adam said that 120 motorcycles were inspected during Ops 'Samseng Jalanan'.

"The operation was carried out by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division, in the wee hours of Sunday (Jan 12).

"We seized 60 motorcycles due to various offences including expired road tax, no insurance coverage and illegal modifications to their motorcycles.

"During the operation, we found a motorcycle with a fake registration number, as well as many riders who did not have licenses.

"In this operation, a total of 170 summonses were issued," he said at a press conference held during operations at the Bayan Lepas Police Station on Sunday morning (Jan 12).

ACP Sazalee said during the operations they found that some of the motorcyclists that they caught were performing dangerous stunts on the Second Bridge.

"Some of them were racing each other as well.

"I want to advise the public to not participate in illegal racing activities as it has become a prevalent problem, especially among teenagers.

"They are the future of our country, parents need to pay close attention to their children and monitor their movement to make sure they do not join groups that race illegally and perform these stunts.

"They need to be taught to value their lives and not endanger other road users as well," he said.

ACP Sazalee said meanwhile, eight more people were arrested for being involved in illegal racing on the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Highway near the Seagate Beach area here.

He said all their motorcycles were seized and the cases are being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Amendment 2020) for reckless driving.

He explained that they could lose their driving licence for up to five years and for subsequent offences they could be punished with a jail of no less than 10 years and a fine of RM10,000 to RM20,000, as well as losing their licence for up to 10 years if convicted.

All those arrested, aged between 15 and 30, were taken to the Bayan Lepas Police Station for documentation and further investigation.
