Two cable thieves nabbed in Gerik

IPOH: Police have arrested two men who are believed to be involved in stealing telecommunication cables in Gerik.

Gerik OCPD Supt Zulkifli Mahmood said the first arrest was made at KM2.2 of the East-West Highway on Friday (Jan 3) at about 12.45am.

Supt Zulkifli said a team of policemen from the Bersia station was on its crime prevention patrols when they saw a suspicious-looking car along the highway.

"We stopped the car, which was driven by a 23-year-old man, for inspection and found a bunch of copper cables that had been burnt.

"We also found tools that we believed were used to cut the cables," he said in a statement on Friday.

"At about 2am on the same day, we arrested a 19-year-old man at Jalan Kampung Bandariang, who is believed to be involved with the first suspect," he added.

Supt Zulkifly said the two men will be remanded for four days until Jan 7 to facilitate investigations under Section 431A of the Penal Code

"Those who witness cable thefts or suspicious acts are to inform the police so that appropriate actions can be taken to prevent or catch the perpetrators," he said.
