Metal rod attack ‘mastermind’ charged

GEORGE TOWN: The person behind the incident in which a lawyer was injured by attackers wielding metal rods has been charged in court.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rozak Muhammad, who did not name the accused, said the 46-year-old suspect was charged in court here yesterday.

“He was arrested and charged this morning. He is the alleged ‘mastermind’ behind the attack.

“He claimed trial in the Magistrate’s Court this morning to the same offence that three others were charged with on Tuesday.

“Bail was set at RM8,000,” he said in a statement yesterday.

ACP Abdul Rozak said 22 people were arrested in the course of the investigation.

On Tuesday, Koay Beng Ghee, Teh Eng Tat, both 36, and Ng Weng Kooi, 41, pleaded not guilty to voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon in an incident that took place in broad daylight in October.

They were jointly charged with injuring Beh Hong Shien, 37, on Oct 22 at 9.50am in Persiaran Karpal Singh, along with another attacker still at large.

They were charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code, read with Section 109 of the same law, and the offence is punishable with imprisonment of up to 10 years or a fine or whipping, or any of the two, upon conviction.

It was previously reported that the victim, a lawyer, was attacked by unknown assailants wielding metal rods, leaving him with serious injuries to the head and shin.
