SAR op expanded for missing man feared drowned in Papar beach

KOTA KINABALU: Rescuers have intensified their search for a 48-year-old victim who is feared drowned following a swimming outing Kg Bundusan in Papar beach.

Two of his nephews - aged eight and 14- drowned while a third nephew, aged 12, was rescued by villagers shortly after the incident that took place around 5pm on Thursday.

Papar Fire and Rescue Station chief Rozlan Osman said that they were broadening the search with the use of drones at sea.

It is learned that the uncle had brought along his three nephews from a neighbouring village for a swim at Kg Bundusan beach late Thursday afternoon.

However, they encountered trouble in the waters they were swimming in after strong waves and currents hit shortly after 5pm.

The rescued 12-year-old, who was closer to shore, was rescued immediately by villagers.

However, his 14-year-year cousin was found unconscious before being declared dead by a medical officer at the scene after attempts to revive him through CPR failed.

The body of the seven-year-old was washed ashore by the waves and was recovered at 6.56pm on Thursday.
