PLUS rolls out measures to handle heavy holiday traffic

PETALING JAYA: Activating 25 smart lanes and deploying more than 4,000 personnel on the ground are among some of the measures that PLUS Malaysia Bhd is rolling out to deal with the heavy year-end holiday traffic.

The highway operator said the 4,000 personnel will be deployed to toll booths while Rela members will help direct traffic.

PLUS will also increase the frequency of PLUSRonda along the highway to deal with breakdowns and improve traffic flow from Dec 20 to Jan 2.

“We will also provide round-the-clock traffic updates and a digital travel schedule through the MyPLUS mobile app,” the company said in a statement yesterday.

It is estimated that the number of vehicles on PLUS highways will likely increase by 14% to 2.12 million per day during the Christmas and year-end holidays compared to 1.85 million on normal days.

“PLUS has made preparations to manage the increase in traffic volume through several methods that will help travellers experience a safe, smooth and comfortable journey,” the highway operator said.

“PLUS advises all highway users to plan their trip and to make use of our rest areas throughout their journey. Aside from the R&R areas, toilets and prayer rooms are also available at all toll plazas.”

PLUS is activating 15 smart lanes on high-density stretches in the central region of the highway that consists of 11 in Selangor, three in Perak and one in Negri Sembilan.

In the northern region, PLUS will activate three smart lanes – all of which are in Seberang Prai, Penang.

In the southern region, PLUS will activate seven smart lanes – five in Johor and one each in Negri Sembilan and Melaka.

Besides MyPLUS, live traffic updates will also be provided through electronic signboards, @PLUSTrafik on the X platform, its AI assistant Maya and on radio stations.

“Except for emergencies, PLUS has temporarily suspended all highway maintenance work from Dec 20 to Jan 2,” it added.
