12 UMT students remanded for repeatedly assaulting fellow student

KUALA TERENGGANU: Twelve students from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) have been remanded for four days to assist in the investigation of a case involving the assault of a male student at the university's residential college, Malay language daily Sinar Harian reports.

Acting Kuala Terengganu OCPD Supt Wan Mohd Zaki Wan Ismail told Sinar Harian that the 12 students, aged between 20 and 22 years old, were arrested at 6pm on Tuesday (Dec 17) after the police received a report from the victim's father.

"The police received a report from a man from Melaka claiming that his 20-year-old son was assaulted by several male students in the residential college.

"The complainant's son also sent several photos showing injuries sustained on various parts of his body during the incident, which occurred between 1am and 5am on Dec 15," he said on Wednesday.

According to Supt Wan Mohd Zaki, the victim's father, who resides in Taman Seri Duyung, Melaka, arrived here on Dec 16 and immediately took his son to Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) for treatment.

Initial investigations revealed bruises and internal injuries on the victim's body caused by blunt objects.

"The injuries are found on the victim's left and right arms, right waist, chest, abdomen, and right leg," he said.

Additionally, the police confiscated weapons believed to have been used by the suspects at the residential college.

"All the suspects were brought to a Kuala Terengganu Magistrate's Court on Wednesday for a remand order, and the case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code," he told Sinar Harian.
