Senior citizen drowns while setting nets in JB pond


JOHOR BARU: A 63-year-old man drowned while setting fishing nets in a pond on Jalan Cendana 6 in Taman Cendana here.

Pasir Gudang fire station operations commander Sharol Suboh said they received an emergency call at 6.33pm on Monday (Dec 16).

“A team was dispatched to the scene, about 7km away, and arrived at 6.40pm.

“Upon arrival, the team (learned that) the victim, identified as Soppigan Katiman, was believed to have drowned while setting nets,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (Dec 17).

Sharol added that the team immediately launched a search operation.

“The victim was found at a depth of 6m (20ft), approximately 6m from the pond's edge.

"Police, who were also on-site, confirmed the victim’s death,” he said.
