Jan 17 mention date for lorry driver on trial for causing woman's death while on drugs

SEREMBAN: The Sessions Court here has fixed Jan 17 for case mention in the trial of a lorry driver charged with causing a woman's death while driving under the influence of drugs.

Judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi set the date after DPP Intan Noorashikin Nasarudin told the court on Tuesday (Dec 17) that 30-year-old accused Jimhar Albasar had just appointed a lawyer.

Jimran had claimed trial when he was charged in the same court on Oct 2.

He was charged with causing the death of the 31-year-old woman, who was driving along Jalan Persiaran Negeri, when his sand-laden lorry ploughed into her car.

He also crashed into four other vehicles during the accident at around 4.15pm on Sept 27.

A urine check on him came back positive for methamphetamine.

A preliminary police probe revealed that the lorry driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the other vehicles which had stopped at a traffic light.

Four others were injured in the crash.

The accused was charged under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Offenders can be jailed between 10 and 15 years and fined between RM50,000 and RM100,000 upon conviction. They can also be barred from holding a driving licence for 10 years.

The accused, represented by Joseph Mathews from the Legal Aid Department, asked the court for permission to briefly meet one of his children who is celebrating his birthday on Friday (Dec 20).

The court granted the request.
