Fuel tanker driver narrowly escapes injury after crash

KOTA KINABALU: A fuel tanker driver has narrowly escaped injury after crashing his vehicle when he dozed off at the wheel.

In the incident at 2.30pm, the driver remained unharmed despite the vehicle overturning.

Sipitang District Police Chief Supt Awang Anak Suanda said initial investigations revealed the tanker was travelling from Kota Kinabalu to Lawas via Sindumin for a fuel delivery.

"As the driver approached the Mile 1 roundabout, he fell asleep. This caused the lorry to mount the roundabout, lose control, and overturn onto the left shoulder of the road," Awang said.

He confirmed there was no oil spill and added that the case is being investigated under Rule 10 of LN166/59 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 for driving while asleep or being negligent in controlling the vehicle, which carries a maximum fine of RM300.

Police urge anyone with information to contact the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division at the Sipitang District Police Headquarters.
