GEORGE TOWN: While new trends come and go, classic Christmas decorations such as baubles, wreaths, tassels and Fraser fir-style artificial trees remain perennial top-sellers.

Sales executive Lu Siew Kheng said these timeless ornaments are a must-have for those looking to deck their halls with festive cheer.

“The baubles are our hottest items.

“Customers change their decor themes each year; if last year was gold, this year might be red.

“They will come in and buy everything in red, then keep the old for next year,” said Lu, an employee of a staple gift and decoration shop along Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong here.

She said they also supply Christmas decorations to hotels, restaurants, churches, hospitals and other establishments.

“We offer ornaments in various sizes, up to 40cm, while smaller ones, 10cm to 20cm, are popular with households looking to top up their theme.

“Poinsettias in gold and red are also a favourite for tree decorations, along with wreaths, especially cherry-themed ones,” she said.

Lu added that customers still love PVC trees, with prices varying based on size, quality and branch density.

“Denser trees with pinecones are pricier, while the more sparse ones cost less naturally.

“The most popular sizes are 6ft and 7ft (1.8m and 2.1m), though some opt for 5ft (1.5m) based on available space,” she said.

At a shop in Prangin Mall here, sales executive Loh Ching Ching said snowman-themed and ombre-coloured tinsel is among this year’s hottest goods.

“Tinsel is always a hit because it can adorn both trees and walls.

“This year, we have tinsel with tiny snowmen, adding a fun twist to the usual designs.

“We also offer star-shaped Christmas lights, which flicker to create a unique, eye-catching effect on trees,” she said.

Loh said another well-received item is the Santa Claus tree, made from three stacked cardboard boxes, a wonderful choice for those who want a non-traditional tree.

“We also have large inflatable baubles and candy canes for customers who prefer non-fragile stuff.

“These are especially great for families with young children, as they can be deflated and stored away after the season,” she said.

Despite the variety of new items, Loh said people still gravitate toward colourful baubles and other classic ornaments as part of their holiday tradition.

“Customers still come in for the 5ft (1.5m) trees and the usual stuff. The other items are usually just fun extras they pick up,” she added.
