Firemen rescue four stranded by rising waters while fishing in Sitiawan

SITIAWAN: A Fire and Rescue Department team has rescued four individuals who found themselves trapped in swiftly moving water while fishing under the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Bridge in Sitiawan in the early hours of Thursday (Dec 12) morning.

Perak Fire and Rescue assistant director (operations) Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said that his team was alerted to the incident at 1.13am.

"We were informed that there were four victims, two men and two women, trapped under the bridge while fishing. On reaching the scene, we found the water level to be knee-high, with the water rising rapidly and moving swiftly," he said

The operations chief and the team from the Sitiawan fire and rescue station launched a boat from a nearby jetty to execute the rescue operation.

Following the rescue, the victims were handed over to the police for further action, he added.

Sabarodzi added that the incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by swift water, particularly when fishing in unfamiliar areas – Bernama
