After JPJ crackdowns, over 6,000 in Lahad Datu sign up to get driving licences

KOTA KINABALU: A total of 6,230 people in Lahad Datu district have signed up for classes following increased cases of motorists being summoned for driving without a licence.

Sabah Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Mohd Harris Ali said Thursday (Dec 12) that following actions such as awareness campaigns and roadblocks, the district had seen an increase in registrations for driving lessons.

It was reported earlier that the number of motorists driving without a licence in Lahad Datu saw an increase of 79.78% from January to November this year over the same period last year.

Harris had said a total of 5,778 cases of driving without a licence were recorded during this period, up from 3,214 cases last year.

He noted that out of 11,621 summonses issued in Lahad Datu during the period, "driving without a licence was the most common offence, accounting for almost 50% of the summonses."

This trend led to more crackdowns carried out and planned by the department, he said after an integrated Ops Bersepadu in Lahad Datu.

He added that more awareness and enforcement programmes will be held to increase safety on the roads.
