Gua Musang facing second wave of floods, residents urged to stay alert

GUA MUSANG: Residents of Gua Musang are urged to remain vigilant and promptly evacuate to the nearest temporary evacuation centre (PPS) as the second wave of floods looms.

Gua Musang Disaster Operations Control Centre chairman Nik Raisnan Daud said the warning was issued due to rising water levels in several major rivers following heavy rainfall since Monday (Dec 9).

"Water levels of rivers in Gua Musang are rising and if rain continues into the evening, more areas could be flooded," he said.

"Disaster management agencies, including the police and Fire and Rescue Department, are on standby to assist with evacuations," he said.

Gua Musang police chief Supt Sik Choon Foo said some villages in the interior and several areas near Gua Musang town were already experiencing floods.

"Among the areas affected are Jalan Kampung Pulai, Felda Aring 2, Felda Chiku 2, Jalan Bandar Gua Musang, Kampung Batu 5 and Batu 6.

"Roads are beginning to flood and residents are urged to exercise caution and follow authorities' instructions if ordered to evacuate. They are also advised to bring their essential documents such as identity cards," he said.

Sik also stressed on the importance of parents closely monitoring their children to ensure their safety and prevent any unfortunate incidents.

According to the Social Welfare Department's Info Bencana portal, one flood relief centre has been opened in Gua Musang as at 1pm Tuesday. The Dewan Semai Bakti Felda Chiku 7 currently accommodates 125 individuals from 30 families. – Bernama
