Petty trader faces trial for reckless driving in fatal collision

JEMPOL: A 59-year-old petty trader claimed trial at the Magistrate's Court here to a charge of reckless driving causing the death of a 17-year-old student.

G. Chandra pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to her before magistrate Norshazwani Ishak.

She was charged with driving her pickup truck dangerously, which led to a collision with the deceased's motorcycle around 12.15am at KM0.5, Jalan Bahau-Rompin, on Oct 27.

She was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless and dangerous driving.

Offenders can be jailed between five and 10 years or fined between RM20,000 and RM50,000 upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Huzaifah Abdul Talib asked the court to set bail at RM8,000 pending remention.

However, the accused, who was unrepresented, asked for a low bail amount as her income was inconsistent.

She told the court that she also had to provide for her family and her husband, who was unable to work due to kidney-related medical issues.

Magistrate Norshazwani then allowed bail of RM4,000 with one surety and ordered that the accused's driving license be suspended until the case is disposed of.

The court then fixed Jan 15 for remention and to allow the accused to appoint a lawyer.
