TWO brothers were caught while collecting “donations” to fund a tahfiz school for orphans in Thailand, reported Kosmo!
The two male suspects aged 54 and 47 were reportedly arrested in Ulu Tiram on Thursday.
The report said the suspects also recruited foreigners and senior citizens to act as fundraisers.
Johor Police Chief Comm Datuk M. Kumar said that in the same raid, his police rescued a local man and five foreign men aged 21 to 70 who were believed to be used as donation collectors by the syndicate.
“The two suspects are the leaders of a fundraising syndicate and they are suspected of acting as guides and planners of the activity.”
“Initial investigations found that the syndicate had been active since mid-2019 and had targeted Johor Bahru, Seri Alam, Kulai, Ayer Hitam and Simpang Renggam,” he said.
Comm Kumar said police seized two vehicles, six boxes marked with the words “sincere donations” for the construction of a tahfiz school for orphans.
A file was also found containing a copy of a letter of appointment of a representative requesting donations using the letterhead allegedly of the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and the Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ).
Police also seized four photographs of the construction of a madrasah, nine mobile phones, 10 money transfer receipts, a stamp in the name of the madrasah and RM9,158 in cash.
