No leak of MyKad data as ‘security guaranteed’

KUALA LUMPUR: The MyKad data of 17 million Malaysians are safe, says the Home Minister.

Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said checks by security agencies and the National Registration Department (NRD) revealed that allegations of the data leak were not true.

“We assure the public that data security on MyKad is guaranteed and is always safe,” he told a press conference yesterday.

He was responding to claims that MyKad data had been leaked and sold on the dark web.

Saifuddin Nasution said the allegation began when a social media user made the claim while showing several pieces of MyKad.

“I have checked with NRD and the National Cyber Security Agency (Nacsa), and both agencies reported that no such incidents have occurred,” he said.

He urged the public to be careful when dealing with unverified information.

Nacsa said it is investigating the allegation.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department deputy director Deputy Comm Datuk Rohaimi Md Isa said the department’s Cyber Crimes and Multimedia Investigation division has not received any reports on the matter.

“A proper investigation will be conducted with the cooperation of other relevant agencies should a police report be lodged.”
