IPOH: Each household affected by the recent flash floods at Arena Kepayang Putra near here will receive RM1,000 in emergency aid, says Nga Kor Ming.
The Housing and Local Government Minister, who is also Kepayang assemblyman said a total of 255 houses were affected during the floods.
"As of this morning, only a total of 174 families have filled up the form and we will pay them immediately.
"Those who have not filled up the form, I ask that it be done quickly for the aid to be sent immediately," he said when visiting the site at Persiaran 13, Arena Kepayang Putra on Thursday (Dec 5).
Nga noted that the recent heavy rainfall, recording 92.5mm, was unusual.
"Climate change is real, there were never floods like this before.
"Areas that were flooded before, may be affected now, so make the necessary preparations," he said.
He added that some 200 mattresses will be given to the affected households here.
"There has also been cleaning up works being done where a total of 185 metric tons of waste have been collected," he added.
On Saturday (Nov 30), several residential areas here were affected by over 10 hours of rainfall, causing flashfloods at Kampung Tasek, Kampung Seri Kinta, and Arena Kepayang Putera.
On the Urban Renewal Bill scheduled to be tabled in Parliament in 2025 Nga said strict project approval procedures would be implemented to address the country's flooding issues and upgrade outdated infrastructure.
"We have old urban areas, including buildings built before 1957. Without an urban renewal law, we will face many problems.
"This includes outdated urban planning and drainage systems that no longer meet current needs," he said.
He added that the Bill was now in its final stage and is expected to be presented in Parliament during the first session next year.
