Three men rescued from MPV roof as vehicle stalls in Segamat floodwaters

SEGAMAT: Three men were forced to climb to the roof of the multi purpose vehicle (MPV) to wait for rescuers when the vehicle stalled in an attempt to traverse floodwaters here.

Segamat Civil Defence Force officer Captain (PA) Nor Hisyam Abdullah said the incident occurred in Kampung Pogoh Tengah here at 3.40pm on Wednesday (Dec 4).

"The victims, from Bekok, were heading towards Kuala Pilah, Negri Sembilan guided by an online navigation system.

"They were led to Kampung Pogoh Tengah and the driver decided to drive through floodwaters but the vehicle stalled and they had to call for help," he said in a statement.

The Segamat APM team arrived at the scene at 4.20pm and found the three men waiting on top of the vehicle.

"The victims, in their mid 40s, were given life jackets and brought to safety in our rescue lorry," he said.

Nor Hisyam added the Public Works Department has since closed the road off to all light vehicles.

According to the Johor Disaster Management Committee, the number of flood evacuees in the state stands at 1,034 people from 294 families as of 8pm on Wednesday.

Segamat and Tangkak are the two districts in Johor currently affected by floods, where 18 temporary flood relief centres are in operation.
