KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Water Department should stop penalising consumers who use water pumps and address low water pressure issues instead, says a consumer group.
David Chan, Sabah chairman of the National Consumer Foundation said the department should instead take immediate steps to address the long-standing issue of low water pressure.
"This has caused significant inconvenience and financial strain on households, especially those at higher elevations," he said on Saturday (Nov 30).
Chan was referring to the department's recent warning not to install water pumps as it would impact the overall water supply system.
However, Chan said it is impossible for water to reach certain households without booster pumps.
"Consumers should not have to purchase and install water pumps to compensate for inadequate water pressure," he said.
He said the department must proactively monitor and ensure water pressure meets required standards, especially in areas with supply issues.
He said it was unreasonable to shift the blame to consumers trying to address a problem caused by systemic shortcomings.
