KOTA KINABALU: An unemployed local man was sentenced to five years in prison by the Sandakan Sessions Court for carrying a 23cm knife at a health complex last week.

Judge Zaini Fishir @ Fisal handed down the sentence to Iwan Tumin, 27, on Wednesday (Nov 27) after he pleaded guilty to the offence committed at the parking lot of a health complex at Mile 7, Labuk Road, at 12.05pm on Nov 19. The judge also ordered him to be whipped once.

Zaini allowed Iwan to begin his jail sentence from the date of his arrest.

He was charged under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive, Explosive and Dangerous Weapons Act 1958 for carrying a dangerous weapon in public, which carries a minimum sentence of five years and a maximum of 10 years in jail, and may also include whipping.
