SEVENTEEN women from B40 families received sewing machines after attending a three-day tailoring course organised in collaboration with the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Makkal Osai reported.

The training session was the brainchild of Sungai Tukang Indian Samuga Nala Membattu Iyakkam chairman Kivi Paranjothi Sundar, who also helped get the sewing machines from the PMO, said coordinator K. Maniam, who is from a Kuala Muda non-government organisation.

The training session, which prioritised single mothers and those living below the poverty line, was held at College Spectrum in Sungai Petani, Kedah.

Maniam said the 17 women would benefit from the training and that the sewing machines could be a way for them to start a service on a small scale.

Asst Comm Zul Hairi from the Kuala Muda district police headquarters officiated the closing ceremony of the training session while Hospital Sultan Abdul Halim’s consultant orthopaedic surgeon SL Vijaya Kumar attended as a special guest.
