Johor may adopt 4.5-day work week amid service improvements

ISKANDAR PUTERI: If the state government can improve its service delivery to the people, Johor will consider a 4.5-day work week, says Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

The Mentri Besar said the state government, with Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim's blessings, was ready to consider a shorter work week for the public sector in the future.

He said that the state government would continue improving its productivity and service delivery systems to the people through various initiatives for now.

“This will be done by strengthening our digital services and lengthening the operating hours at critical counters, including operating during lunch hour from 1pm to 2pm.

“Another approach we will take is to standardise the operating hours of counters across all state and federal government departments and agencies as well as local councils,” he said when tabling the Johor Budget 2025 at Kota Iskandar here on Thursday (Nov 21).

“If these improvements prove effective, the state government, with the Johor Regent’s blessings, is ready to consider the suggestion for a 4.5-day work week for the public sector without reducing the overall working hours,” he added.

Onn Hafiz also announced a two-month bonus for civil servants working in Johor next year.
