KUALA TERENGGANU: Six students from SM Imtiaz Yayasan Terengganu Kuala Berang have won the gold medal for their innovative learning tools at the International Innovative Technology Summit 2024 in Beijing, China, held from Nov 7 to 11.

The projects, Virtual Geo Learning (VIGEEL) and The Repeater, were developed by students from Forms Two, Three, and Four.

Three Fourth Formers were behind The Repeater.

Accompanying teacher Nurul Fatiha Mohd Ramli shared with Bernama that the students initially passed a selection round at Universiti Malaya in February this year and went on to win gold medals at a subsequent stage of the competition in Bangkok, Thailand, in April.

Nurul Fatiha explained that the students developed these tools with guidance from supervising teachers and support from Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin for expertise, as well as feedback from SMA Mahmudiah Kuala Berang and SMA Marang.

VIGEEL leverages virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies, focusing on the topic of transportation in Form Two Geography.

"This product engages students by allowing them to see and experience transportation systems, with pop-up notes for learning," said Nurul Fatiha.

She added that students can virtually experience modes of transportation like the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and airplanes.

She described The Repeater as an application designed to store students' Quran memorisation progress and function as a reminder to recite verses before memorising them.

"It reminds students to memorise specific verses daily. If they don't comply with the reminder, the task accumulates, helping them maintain discipline in Quran memorisation," she said.

The students used free coding software from the Internet for The Repeater and purchased a second-hand VR headset for under RM1,000 to complete the VIGEEL innovation.

Nurul Fatiha expressed hope for financial support from various parties, particularly as they aim to participate in a similar competition in Cambodia next April.

She also mentioned plans to commercialise the products with an English language setting for wider use. – Bernama
