Cops shoot to stop car after suspects try to ram police vehicle in Gerik

IPOH: The police were forced to fire a shot to stop a car after it tried to ram into a police vehicle in Gerik.

Gerik OCPD Supt Zulkifli Mahmood said the car, with four men inside, had tried to speed away after being told to stop at about 3.40am on Tuesday (Nov 12).

"We had earlier received a tip off regarding a communications cable theft incident at Kampung Padang Kunyit, Gerik.

"We managed to track down the car the suspects were in and followed it until Jalan Ulu Kenderong-Tanjung Kala," he said in a statement today.

"When instructed to stop, the driver of the car sped away.

"One of our police cars tried to intercept them but the suspect was driving dangerously and tried to ram into the police vehicle.

"In self-defence, we fired one shot at the suspects' car right tyre, forcing it to stop," he added.

Supt Zulkifli said the police managed to arrest two men, while two others escaped.

"We are trying to track down the escapees.

"We also found a transparent packet, believed to contain syabu, in the car," he said, adding that the two men that were arrested would be remanded for seven days until Nov 18.

The case is being investigated under Section 307/309 of the Penal Code, Section 39 of the Arms Act and Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
