Driver avoids cat, hits woman instead

Serious situation: The driver said she was trying to avoid a cat when she rammed into a woman instead.

MELAKA: A 37-year-old housewife is fighting for her life at Melaka Hospital after being rammed just outside her house by a car driver who was trying to avoid a cat in Batu Berendam here.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said that Yeo May Fong had sustained serious head, leg and hip injuries in the incident that took place at about 11.40pm on Wednesday.

The victim was standing outside her home at Taman Sutera Wangi when the mishap happened.

The 29-year-old driver of the car, a supervisor, claimed in her police report that she was trying to avoid hitting a cat crossing the street when she lost control of her vehicle, he said.

She then rammed into the victim and a car parked nearby, she added.

“Both the victim and the driver live in the housing estate,” ACP Christopher said yesterday.

The 37-year-old owner of the other car, he said, also lodged a police report over his damaged vehicle.

The incident is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless driving.

The victim is said to have undergone major surgery on Wednesday night and has remained in the hospital’s intensive care unit as at press time.
