Seven police officers charged with drug offences in Sungai Petani


SUNGAI PETANI: Seven police officers of varying ranks were charged in the Sungai Petani Magistrate's Court on Thursday with allegedly consuming drugs at an entertainment centre last month.

All the accused pleaded not guilty and claimed trial after the charges were read to them in two separate courts before Magistrate M Kalaiarasi and Magistrate Khairatul Animah Jelani.

The accused are Corporal Mohammad Muizzuddin Mohamad Taib, 29; Lance Corporal Wan Muneer Abdullah, 36; Mohd Fazly Long, 45; Sergeant Mohd Khairi Zakaria, 55; Corporal Muhammad Azri Zakariya, 35; Lance Corporal G Selva Kumar, 36; and Lance Corporal TS Sarvindran, 28.

They serve at the Kuala Muda District Police Headquarters (IPD), IPD Yan, and IPD Pendang, and are charged with unlawfully ingesting dangerous drugs, namely ketamine and methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA).

All the accused are alleged to have committed the offence at an entertainment centre in Aman Square here between 4.20am and 7.23am on Oct 2.

Another police officer, Francis Nawan Johny, 35, was also charged with ingesting methamphetamine and amphetamine at the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division Office, IPD Kuala Muda, at 12.25am on the same date.

As a result, all are charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a penalty of up to two years' imprisonment or a fine not exceeding RM5,000 if convicted.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutors S Preeya and Nur Hazwani Md Noor, while the accused were represented by their respective lawyers.

The court granted bail of RM2,000 with one surety, and the accused were ordered to report to the nearest police station within a specified period.

The case will be mentioned again between 3 and 12 December 2024 for the submission of documents.
