PAC to summon Lim, Zafrul

THE Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will summon former finance ministers Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz and Lim Guan Eng to testify before the committee in its investigation into 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) asset recovery.

PAC chairman Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said Treasury secretary-general Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican and 1MDB asset recovery taskforce chairman Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani have already given their statements to the committee.

To complete the proceedings, she said Tengku Zafrul, who is now the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister, and his predecessor Lim would be summoned.

She said former Treasury secretary-general Datuk Asri Hamidon and the law firm Rosli Dahlan Saravanan (RDS) Partnership would also be summoned.

Both Asri and the firm had previously been involved with the 1MDB special task force.

“The proceedings are expected to be held in the third week of November,” she told a press conference in Parliament House yesterday.

The PAC began its probe after the Auditor-General’s Report flagged issues related to 1MDB’s financial commitments.

According to the report, grants amounting to RM39.74bil were channelled to 1MDB between 2019 and 2023 by the government.

The report recommended that the recovery of assets linked to 1MDB and SRC International Sdn Bhd be expedited.

According to the Auditor-General, the funds were crucial to cover the repayments of debts owed by 1MDB and SRC International, as well as other liabilities, given that the Assets Recovery Trust Account (AAMKA) will close by 2028.

The report also disclosed that 262 or 31% of the 842 loans issued by the government had outstanding repayments amounting to RM9.612bil as of Dec 31, 2023.
