Police op reduces motorcycle accidents by 10.1%

KUALA LUMPUR: A special police operation has cut the number of motorcycle accidents by 10.1% compared to last year, says Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri.

The Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director said the one-month special operation was conducted from Aug 12 until Sept 12.

“During this period, there were 2,461 motorcycle-related accidents recorded.

“It’s a reduction of 274 cases, or 10.1%, compared to the 2,735 cases in the same period last year,” he said after the JSPT monthly assembly yesterday.

Fatal accidents involving motorcycles also saw a 26.03% dip during this period, he added.

“A total of 321 fatal accidents (involving motorcycles) were recorded this year. It’s a reduction compared to 434 cases last year,” said Comm Mohd Yusri.

The number of deaths also declined by 14.7%, compared to 436 deaths recorded during the same period last year, he said.

He said the nationwide operation involved all police state and district contingents, aimed at reducing the number of accidents involving motorcycles, especially fatal ones.

“The special operation saw a significant reduction in the number of accidents,” he said.

The JSPT, he said, will continue to conduct various operations towards this end, in particular those involving motorcyclists and pillion riders.

“We advise all road users to adhere to traffic regulations.

“Parents, too, play an important part in monitoring their children so that they are not involved in unlawful activities,” he said.

Meanwhile, on another matter, Comm Mohd Yusri said 6,013 accidents and 60 deaths were recorded nationwide during the Deepavali long weekend.
