Hunt for suspects after attempts to run down cop in Tapah, says cop

IPOH: Police are searching for two suspects who attempted to run down a police officer, led authorities on a high-speed chase, drove against traffic, and ultimately abandoned their vehicle to flee on foot into a nearby jungle.

Tapah district police chief Supt Mohd Naim Asnawi said at around noon on Wednesday (Nov 6), the district police headquarters received information from a senior officer at the Kajang police headquarters regarding a chase that began in Kajang and extended up to the Tapah rest and recreational area.

He reported that the officer informed them of a grey car, occupied by a local man and woman, which had attempted to ram a police car and an officer after being ordered to stop in front of a fast-food restaurant.

In response, the police team fired four shots at the vehicle in self-defence.

“However, the suspects managed to escape by driving against the flow of traffic heading south on the North-South Expressway. Upon reaching the 332.5km mark, the suspects abandoned the car and fled on foot into a nearby forest,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

Supt Mohd Naim said the 10 officers from Kajang attempted to stop the suspects, who are believed to be involved in a series of house break-ins around Kajang.

The Perak police contingent’s forensic and K-9 units have been deployed to the scene to assist in the investigation. The Tapah district police headquarters has also launched an operation to track down the suspects.

The vehicle is registered to a local woman, while the male suspect has 15 prior records, including eight criminal and seven narcotics-related cases.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

Members of the public with information regarding the incident are urged to come forward to any police station or contact the Tapah district police headquarters at 05-4011222.
