MMEA vessel catches fire while docked in Miri


KUCHING: A Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) patrol vessel caught fire while docked at Kuala Baram, Miri.

Lutong Fire and Rescue Department chief Henry Jugah said the fire broke out mid-deck of the vessel KM Stapa.

He said a team was dispatched to the scene after receiving a call at 11.35pm on Thursday (Oct 31).

"The team found that the fire, which started from the second deck section, had already damaged 40% of the vessel.

"Fortunately, no one was injured as the vessel was under maintenance at the time," he said in a statement on Friday (Nov 1).

Henry said the fire was brought under control at about 12.50am.

After ensuring the situation was safe, firefighters ended the operation at 5.10am.

The cause of the fire and losses are being investigated.
