Police investigating display of foreign flag at Johor Baru festival


JOHOR BARU: Police have launched an investigation following a viral video showing individuals displaying a foreign national flag during an international cultural festival parade in Sentosa.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat reported that police received a report on Monday (Oct 28) at 3pm concerning a video circulating on social media depicting the incident at the event.

Raub indicated that the programme, organised by a cultural association in Sentosa, included participants from over ten countries for a religious gathering.

"We have received a report regarding the display of a foreign national flag during the parade at around 3pm on Monday (Oct 28).

“As a result, an investigation file has been opened under Section 3(1) of the National Emblems (Control of Display) Act 1949 for the display of national emblems in public," he stated in a message on Tuesday (Oct 29).

He mentioned that the case is also being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for making statements with intent to cause fear or alarm to the public, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities.

"We will be calling the organisers and relevant witnesses to assist with the investigation," he added.

The police have urged anyone with information to contact the Johor Baru South Hotline at 07-218 2323 or any nearby police station to aid in the investigation.
