Kota Kinabalu teacher charged with sexual harassment of pupil

KOTA KINABALU: A 36-year-old private school teacher has pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court to a charge of committing physical sexual harassment against his 10-year-old pupil.

Sessions Court Judge Hurman Hussain on Friday (Oct 25), fixed Nov 28 for the mention of the case against Rhurstern Chin, who allegedly committed the offence by touching the girl's breasts at a tuition centre in Luyang between 3pm and 6pm in August of this year.

He was released on RM5,000 bail with two local sureties pending the disposal of his case, and ordered to report twice a month to the nearest police station.

Chin was also ordered to surrender his passport, if any, to the court, and was warned not to tamper with the prosecution’s witnesses.

The offence framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Bryan Francis appeared for the prosecution, while Chin was represented by counsel Sylvester Kuan.
