The Star shines at Sarawak Environmental Media Awards

KUCHING: The Star has won two awards at the state-level National Environment Day celebration here.

Photographer Zulazhar Sheblee took first place in the Sarawak Environmental Media Awards photo category, while journalist Sharon Ling was second runner-up in the news report category.

They received cash prizes of RM3,100 and RM1,100, respectively, along with a trophy and certificate.

The awards, sponsored by Press Metal (Bintulu) Sdn Bhd, were presented by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg at the Majma Event and Convention Centre on Wednesday (Oct 23).

State Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) controller Datuk Jack Liam said the awards honoured journalists who made significant contributions through published environmental management and sustainability articles.

"Their work plays a crucial role in raising public awareness and inspiring individuals to become more mindful of their impact on the environment.

"By effectively communicating vital issues, these writers empower our communities to take action and champion the protection of our planet," he said.

Jack said NREB collaborated with its strategic partners to organise other activities in conjunction with the celebration, in addition to the media awards.

These included a choral speaking competition for primary and secondary schools and sustainable school awards.

Additionally, Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd held a zero food waste video competition to raise awareness on reducing food waste, while the Kuching South City Council organised an ewaste collection campaign.

"During this campaign, we collected 20 tonnes of electronic waste, demonstrating our community's strong commitment to responsible ewaste management and environmental sustainability," Jack said.
