Blackjack ends in broken ankle for gambling organiser

ISKANDAR PUTERI: A foreign man fractured his left ankle trying to evade police by jumping from the top window of a double-storey shophouse.

Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm M. Kumarasan said police raided the premises for illegal gambling activity involving a group of foreign nationals after a week-long stakeout.

“After carrying out surveillance, police launched an operation at a double-storey shophouse in Taman Nusa Bestari here at around 3am on Monday (Oct 21).

“The premise is believed to have been use as a gambling den for those wanting to play blackjack,” he said during a press conference held at Iskandar Puteri district police headquarters here on Monday.

ACP Kumarasan added during the operation, police detained 19 foreign suspects including 10 females, between the ages of 24 and 55 years, for allegedly gambling.

He added that police seized 52 pieces of playing cards with three packets of playing cards and more than RM52,800 in cash in the operation.

“During the operation, one of the male suspects tried to escape by jumping out of the back window. However, the suspect landed awkwardly causing an injury to his left ankle.

“Early investigation indicates that the injured suspect, together with a female suspect, who is his girlfriend, have been organising gambling activities,” he said adding that the injured suspect has been sent to Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) for medical treatment.

ACP Kumarasan added that the arrested had no prior records and tested negative for drugs. They have been remanded until Thursday (Oct 24)

He said police were investigating the case under Section 6(1) of the Open House Gambling Act 1953 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated case, police detained two men, including a local, in two separate incidents, after they were found with 214 cartons of various liquor brands with unpaid duty worth more than RM98,000.

ACP Kumarasan said acting upon information, police detained a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) along Tanjung Pelepas highway near Tanjung Kupang at around 7.50pm on last Wednesday (Oct 16).

He said a 31-year-old local male was driving the vehicle containing 188 cartons of unpaid duty beer.

“Further checks found the suspect has one drug record against him but tested negative for drugs,” he said adding that the suspect has since been released on police bail.

In the second case, ACP Kumarasan said police seized 26 cartons of liquor and beers after carrying out a check at a restaurant around Tanjung Pelepas here.

“Police carried out checks at the premises last Thursday (Oct 17) at around 9.30pm following information on smuggling activities. We found various liquor and beer brands without unpaid customs duty.

“We also detained the restaurant worker, who is a 31-year-old foreign national, to help with the investigations,” he said adding that the total value of the seized items in the two cases was more than RM118,000.

ACP Kumarasan added the two cases were being investigated under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967, Section 135(1)(d) of the same Act and Section 15(1)(C) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
