65-year-old scammed by woman met online, loses RM113,000

KLUANG: A 65-year-old businessman lost RM113,000 after falling for an investment scam offered by an unknown woman he befriended online.

Kluang OCPD Asst Comm Bahrin Mohd Noh said the victim began communicating with the suspect via WhatsApp in August, though they never met in person.

“The man had connected with the suspect through a social media platform and was offered a business partnership.

“In early October, the suspect proposed a business arrangement where the victim would invest capital while the suspect would manage the business, with profits to be shared equally,” he said in a statement on Monday (Oct 21).

ACP Bahrin added that the victim subsequently made 36 financial transactions, amounting to RM113,000, to four different bank accounts.

“The victim only realised he had been deceived when no profits were forthcoming, and attempts to contact the suspect failed,” he said, adding that the victim lodged a police report on Sunday (Oct 20).

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. If convicted, the offence carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison, whipping, or a fine.

“We hope that the public can exercise caution when conducting online transactions.

“They are also advised to verify phone numbers and bank account details using the “Semak Mule” application provided by the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID).

“They can also follow the Royal Malaysia Police's social media channels, such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, to stay informed about the latest commercial crime tactics,” he added.
